Celebrations + Marriott = Another Successful Christmas Open House
July might be too early to start planning for Christmas for most people, but not for us at Celebrations! We believe no time is soon enough to start getting ready our favorite time of the year...Christmas!!!
For 2 years now, the start of Christmas Season for us is marked by the Annual Christmas Open House in July with Celebrations working in tandem with the Grand Cayman Marriott Hotel. This annual event was initiated for Marriott to showcase the different types of services and venue options that it has to offer and for Celebrations to exhibit the various Christmas Party themes that we can create at the Marriott.
We take this great opportunity to introduce our varied themes that can range from the eclectic to the traditional, from rustic to the luxurious and from small Holiday soirees to large corporate Christmas parties! Really and truly, anything is possible with Marriott and Celebrations working together.
Here's a sneak peek at some of the themes we've unveiled at this year's Christmas Open House!
Events such as this not only prove to be the perfect venue to reveal our decor themes but also for our staff to mingle with our long-standing partners and clients and to meet new friends!
Great food, cocktails, excellent customer service and well thought-of decor can only spell one word.... PARTY!
To Marriott Management and Staff, thank you once again for this wonderful collaboration! It is such a great experience to be working alongside people who share the same passion that we have: perfection, no less.

Cayman Destination Wedding in Outer Space!
Talk about out of this world! Being in wedding and events is the most awesome industry you can be in! You have to love it, must have that burning passion and feel so humbly gracious when results such as our story today reveals, that it reaffirms your passion and so makes it all worthwhile!
Two days ago Ahmed (one of our Senior Event Planners) and I had the great privilige to be invited to attend a brief ceremony at the Westin Casuarina, where the ‘out of this world’ Cayman flag was presented to our Cayman Islands Government!
Well the story is, Capt. Greg Johnson and his lovely wife Nannette, had their destination wedding right here in Grand Cayman on January 19, 2008 at a private villa in Rum Point. Both Greg and Nanette are astronauts working at NASA in Cape Canaveral! Greg is a Pilot for NASA while Nanette is a Grounds Engineer.
What clinched their decision in choosing the Cayman Islands as the perfect place for their wedding was the fact that they always have such a marvelous experience every time they visit. In fact, their first vacation as a couple was right here in Cayman.

To quote Nanette:
"Greg and I had our first vacation together on Grand Cayman in July 2007. Greg always said that one of the keys to a happy marriage is to be compatible on a vacation so this was sort of a test for us, a fun one at that! Needless to say we had a perfect vacation. We spent a luxurious romantic week, just the two of us and had a wonderful time - scuba diving, snorkeling, hanging out at Rum Point, shopping in Georgetown, touring Pedro's Castle, eating out at all the excellent restaurants, and floating in our pool. Two months later Greg proposed so I guess we were pretty compatible. After he proposed I found out there was an ulterior motive to our trip. We both knew we wanted to have a destination wedding so while we were on vacation he was also scouting out possible wedding locations,"
Ahmed was the Wedding Planner for this couple, and together himself and the entire team at Celebrations, coupled with the wonderful service providers for their wedding made for a very special event, one that made so much of an impression, this wonderful gentleman, Greg, very kindly offered to take the Cayman Islands flag to space and to fly it during the mission and then to return it to the Government of the Cayman Islands on his return. What an incredible gesture of good feeling, what an honor! Ahmed was personally invited for the Atlantis Space Shuttle ( STS-125) launch last May 11. STS-125 is a 5.3 million-odyssey that was the final servicing mission for NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. Greg is the pilot for this historical mission.

This is such an amazing story, and for me, I am so proud of our Islands and that our team was able to be part of their wonderful experience in Cayman in making their wedding so memorable that they wanted to include this little island in this special way. That’s why I love what we do…. making people happy, and being part of their lives in such an incredible way, nothing could be better! The Johnsons brought their wonderful family with them on this last trip and plan to make many more trips to our Islands in the years to come. Thanks again Greg and Nanette - we are so honored!

Engage!09 Featured in Cayman Compass
Article written by Cliodhna Doherty of Cayman Compass.
Here's the article verbatim.
Here's the article verbatim.
Some of the biggest names in weddings are saying “I do” to Cayman as a top wedding destination after a top notch wedding symposium’s success here recently.
Such was the impression made that within days of the conference taking place, a new up–scale wedding has been moved here from another Caribbean island and much interest is being shown from wedding planners.
Engage ’09 Something Blue, a Luxury Wedding Symposium was held at the Ritz–Carlton, Grand Cayman from 21 –24 June.

The organizers of the prestigious event, Rebecca Grinnals of Engaging Concepts, Inc. and the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism literally brought together the ‘best of the best” in the wedding industry.
And now the Cayman Islands can only be set to reap the rewards, according to organisers and local sponsors.
“It was an awesome event for Cayman and it went really well. It can only translate to more weddings and celebrity weddings coming here,” said Managing Director of Celebrations Jo–Anne Brown, one of the main sponsors of the event.
“Quite simply it was an amazing success, really beyond our wildest dreams,” said Mrs Grinnals who is Romance Consultant for the Cayman Islands.
With the top names in weddings in attendance, including Preston Bailey and Michelle Rago among many other famous wedding designers, planners, photographers and media, the high impact luxury wedding business summit attracted the high end wedding industry professionals.
“Over 175 attendees came from 27 states and nine countries – as far away as Calgary, Alberta and the UK.”
Such top media as Darcy Miller of Martha Stewart Weddings and Carley Roney from The Knot.com will also provide high publicity on the event and destination. There was also much live blogging from the event.
Preston Bailey during Engage! 09.Photo by: Stacey KaneA top name in celebrity wedding planning, Preston Bailey said, “The location is beautiful, the beaches are great and what I’ve noticed so far is there’s a lot of good taste here and there’s money, so all of those ingredients are really perfect for a wonderful destination area.”
Mrs Grinnals said there is no question that the symposium will bring more luxury wedding business in both the long and short term to the Cayman Islands.
“We had destination wedding planners going on island site tours afterwards with the sole purpose of seeking locations for couples they are working with.
“We have a story of a Texas based wedding planner who had already been in touch with a couple she is working with who had started planning in St. John in the USVI but she called them from Cayman and told them that they must switch destinations as this was the perfect location for what they were looking for.”
Mrs Grinnals noted that about 80 per cent of the speakers/attendees had never visited Cayman before and they were enchanted with the beauty, sun, sea, sand and the level of talent on island to support weddings.
“People could not believe it and cannot stop talking about it. And these are key influencers in the wedding market . . . We created an environment that allowed everyone to not just tell these influencers/bridal media what Cayman is capable of and what makes it such a unique and special destination, we created an environment to show them – and that is so much more powerful.”

Celebrations’ Mrs. Brown gave attendees the benefit of her extensive years of experience in the destination wedding industry from a Caribbean perspective as part of a panel discussion.
“It was very awesome to be on this panel and questioned from people from all over the world,” she said.
She got the message out that Cayman wedding planners can be an extension to wedding planners coming to work on–island.
And the feedback to her, in turn, was that it was wonderful to have a company such as Celebrations that is equipped to such a level as they are, with ability to provide for all facets of a wedding, such as transport trucks, calligraphers, seamstresses, tents chairs etc. On other Caribbean islands upscale or celebrity wedding planners have to deal with many different suppliers and vendors, some of whom may not be that dependable.

Mrs Brown explained that Celebrations did all the floral for the entire event from beginning to end. The first night was designed by big name Michelle Rago but was still executed by Celebrations.
“There was some amazing feedback,” she explained. “It’s very heart–warming because these people [the visiting wedding planners] work with budgets that have no restraints.”
And for the Cayman Islands, definitely more high–end weddings will come from this, she admits. “So many planners have emailed me and said they will be pushing for weddings in the Cayman Islands,” she said.
Mrs Brown also announced at the symposium that she is writing a table–top book “Caribbean Wedding Style”, with her perspective of what Caribbean wedding style is.And the trend for destination weddings looks like the market will continue to grow, despite the recession, the conference heard.
Twelve years ago when destination weddings started they comprised of one or two per cent of US weddings and that figure has now grown to 20 per cent.
An Emmy–winning film crew was on hand to capture all of the footage for a planned one–hour television special on the event and the many attendees, to air near the end of 2009.
The brand new wedding website www.caymanvows.ky was launched by the Department of Tourism at the event

Engage 09 - Something Blue - Celebrations Final Party

After the fantastic welcome party on the beach, the challenge was pretty big, to put on a night to remember that stacked up and that everyone would have fun at! I am elated at how much fun and how well this party went! Big challenge for local company Celebrations.... but we love a challenge! It could not have been any better... and I hope all the Engage 09 attendees agree... it certainly seemed so! The truth is... no one wanted to leave!Want to hear a little secret? Rebecca of Engaging Concepts didn't think we'll need a dance floor, and that people probably won't dance and that it will be more like talking, networking etc. To this I said :"Well in fact I have designed the room with two dance floors." I could see the puzzled look on her face! But guess what, we partied alright!!
I want to say special thanks to DJ Craig, and all of the great entertainers, Gary Ebanks on saxophone, Kate Allenger on violins, Eden Hurlston on congas, and Glenn Scot on guitars for the fantastic music! Not to be forgotten for a moment, the finishing touch, our partners Intec Lighting & Production for an outstanding job and of course the Ritz Carlton's entire team, together we all cooked up a party of style and significance.
We've put together a small video to show how successful the party was. Thanks to David Wolfe for taking great photos of the party! Hope you enjoy the video!!!

Our Very Own Ahmed and His Space Shuttle Launch Experience

Ahmed Elkaswani, a Celebrations wedding planner, has been featured in the local newspaper, Caymanian Compass, talking about his Space Shuttle Launch experience. Needless to say, we're happy for Ahmed who up to now is still gushing about this wonderful experience. He's literally bouncing off our office walls!
Please read the entire article below as written by Camanian Compass' Cliodhna Doherty:
It’s not everyday that someone gets to witness a space shuttle launch on an important mission to help humans understand more about the universe.
But that’s exactly the situation in which Grand Cayman resident Ahmed Elkaswani found himself in recently after he had planned the wedding of two astronauts here in the Cayman Islands.
The Celebrations employee witnessed the take–off of the Atlantis Space Shuttle on 11 May from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on its mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. “It was a completely different experience,” Ahmed enthused. “I’ve never experienced anything like this before. You meet doctors and you meet race car drivers but you don’t meet astronauts on a daily basis, which is quite cool,” he told the Caymanian Compass.
Gregory Johnson, the NASA pilot of the Atlantis Spacecraft and his now wife Nanette Faget, a Ground Engineer at NASA, fell in love with Grand Cayman after they visited in 2007. They married here in January 2008 with Ahmed as their wedding planner for Celebrations. Ahmed showed the couple a lot of interest in their roles as astronauts at NASA.
“When they came down here just before their wedding we had a sit down and I started asking them more questions about what they do and about this mission going up to space. “To me, it’s out of this world, literally. It just doesn’t seem real to a regular person like me in the Caribbean.”
The wedding, which took place at a private villa at Kaibo, was a great success and shortly afterwards Ahmed received an email from Nanette inviting him to join them for the Atlantis launch.
“I said ‘Of course, I would be delighted, it would make my year, it would make my century I think’. So I was very excited,” he said.
But it was to be a long wait. He got the invite in February 2008 and the launch was originally scheduled for August of that year, but then the launch was delayed to October and then postponed to February 2009. Then a date was finally set for 11 May, enabling Ahmed to book his flights and get ready to go.
And so he found himself at the Kennedy Space Centre near Cape Canaveral, on 11 May, on a causeway about four miles from the launch pad with friends and family of the other astronauts and crew. “It was one of the closest areas and we had a clear view of the launch pad and shuttle,” he said.
The causeway was a private secured outdoor area. He explained that immediate family members of the crew could not even be too close to the launch pad because of gas and fumes from the space shuttle.
Speaking about the actual launch, he said, “It was amazing – the view – and it was the experience of a lifetime to feel the ground shaking. It was pretty cool.“The sound itself just makes it surreal – that roar. I was sitting there almost in shock watching this thing thinking that I know the person sitting in there that’s going to fly it up into space. It’s an amazing experience just to sit and watch and know you know the person in there.”
Coupled with the excitement, he was nervous for his friend’s safety.

“I was shaking the whole time. The thing is on rocket fuel and the thing could blow up and you’ve got so many people watching it.”
“The Hubble scope is an amazing instrument. It’s amazing to be part of the whole scenario – to know that someone is up there working on something that can help everyone on this earth with knowing what dark matter is and what the Big Bang Theory means, all of that. This is what the telescope is trying to solve, so it’s a pretty cool machine.”
Many Hubble observations have led to breakthroughs in astrophysics such as accurately determining the rate of expansion of the universe.
And following the mission they have revived the Hubble scope to last another five to 10 years with a new battery and sensors to reach above and beyond what it did before.
There was live video feed between the crew and ground control centres and interviews with the astronauts from space.
There was live video feed between the crew and ground control centres and interviews with the astronauts from space.
One of the highlights of Ahmed’s experience was getting an email from Gregory from outer space while on his 11 day mission, which included five space walks, two of which were rated one of the top 10 longest space walks in history, said Ahmed.
The spacecraft was supposed to land on Friday, 22 May in Florida but because of bad weather it landed instead in California on Sunday, 24 May.
Ahmed also believes the Cayman Islands flag went to space and it is hoped there will a presentation of this at some stage to the Cayman Islands’ Government.
The night before the launch there was a cocktail reception for the friends and families of the astronauts, to which Ahmed was also invited.
“It was amazing. It was at the Apollo–Saturn V Museum at the Kennedy Space Centre. It was a private function and we got to mingle with all the other crew members that were there in support of the mission.”
The morning of the launch they got to walk around the Kennedy Space Centre and view the attractions. “It was only open to the visitors that were going to witness the launch,” he said. All in all, Ahmed says it is an experience he will always cherish. “I was not only there for myself but for Celebrations and the Cayman Islands,” he said.
“It was a once in a lifetime experience and history in the making. It’s the last shuttle to repair the telescope.”
“And for the country [Cayman] to be part of that too and to have Greg liking the country so much to hopefully have taken a flag up there, that’s pretty cool,” he said.
